Photos of Bohemia

Welcome to Bohemia! Bohemia, now a province of the Czech Republic, was an independent country with a recorded history dating back to the 5th century B.C. It was incorporated into Czechoslovakia after World War I and has been a province of the Czech Republic since 1993. It looks like a fairy tale land full of castles.

Our son, Bill, made his first visit to Cesky Krumlov in the winter. He accompanied us on our visit in the summer and knew all the good places. Konopiste castle, close to Prague, was built in the 14th century. Archduke Ferdinand, whose murder in Sarajevo triggered World War I, bought the castle in 1887.

Cesky Budejovice, a city about halfway between Prague and Cesky Krumlov is the home of Budvar. Americans are more familiar with the product as Budweiser beer. Tabor was founded in the early 1400s at a time of religious warfare and upheaval. Underneath the city is a network of passages and cellars that protected the citizens from attacks and frequent fires.
