Welcome to Bohemia! Bohemia, now a province of
the Czech Republic, was an independent country with a recorded history
dating back to the 5th century B.C. It was incorporated into Czechoslovakia
after World War I and has been a province of the Czech Republic since 1993.
It looks like a fairy tale land full of castles. |

Inside the grounds of the castle at Cesky Krumlov. All of
the building ornamentation, which looks like tile, mosaic and brick, is
painted. |
"Downtown" Cesky Krumlov. This picturesque village is close
to the Austrian border and is a popular honeymoon destination. |

Our son, Bill, made his first visit to Cesky
Krumlov in the winter. He accompanied us on our visit in the summer and knew
all the good places. |
Konopiste castle, close to Prague, was built in
the 14th century. Archduke Ferdinand, whose murder in Sarajevo triggered
World War I, bought the castle in 1887. |

Karlstejn Castle was built in 1348 to house the
religious relics of King Charles IV. |
Karlstejn Castle lies in the valley of Berounka
and is 30 kilometers south of Prague. |

Cesky Budejovice, a city about halfway between
Prague and Cesky Krumlov is the home of Budvar. Americans are more familiar
with the product as Budweiser beer. |
Tabor was founded in the early 1400s at a time
of religious warfare and upheaval. Underneath the city is a network of
passages and cellars that protected the citizens from attacks and frequent
fires. |
